Why do guys on dating apps often just first message "hey" or "hey how are you" instead of being more creative and unique? How do they think being a copycat will stand out?

Because it's a standard phrase to start communication.

Of course, farther on when you start chatting moreover dating being smart and creative will really impress, but only as a SUPPLEMENT to attractive look.

BTW all the girls start their messages with a similar simple greeting.
